Mrs. Cheryl D. Thomas

On February 5, 1965, Cheryl Denise (McCaney) Thomas was the second child born to Charles McCaney and Ma`e Mae Wortham. She was eagerly embraced by her brothers, Quintin and Kevin. To the world at large, she was Cheryl, but to family and friends, she was known as “Niecey”. Being the first girl of her generation and the only girl in the family, Niecey was spoiled to the nth degree! There was nothing she wanted that she did not get. When she was three years old, Ma`e met Wallace S. Bean, who cherished her and always referred to her as his “baby girl”. At the age of nine, Niecey received news that she was no longer the “baby” of the family, as they welcomed their new addition, Darrell. She was not impressed at all and quickly and adamantly suggested they take him back to from whence he came! Realizing this was not possible, she eventually accepted him and was proud to be called his big sister. At an early age, it was evident that Niecey had the “gift of gab”! When she wasn’t talking to her doll audience, and if she caught your ear, you were in for a long-haul conversation. This gic never wavered throughout her lifetime. Her favorite segway into furthering the conversation was, “But, wait, let me tell you this!” Niecey received her early childhood education at Whi`er and Columbine Elementary and Cole Middle Schools. Her early skills as a caregiver were exhibited when she was given the charge of walking her cousin, Eric, to and from Columbine Elementary School. She had to often explain to him why he couldn’t take his Tonka Winnebago to school. She always made sure he had safe passage to and from school. As a proud Manual High School Thunderbolt cheerleader, she had the opportunity to cheer at one of the Denver Nuggets’ games. While there, she met a member of the team, Alex English. Needless to say, he became her favorite basketball player. She was a graduate of Manual High School, Class of 1983. After graduation, Niecey wanted to embrace her passion for caring for people, so she enrolled, completed her studies, and received her Licensed Practical Nurse Degree. Not being one to segle, she studied further to acquire more, and thus received her Registered Nurse Degree. Niecey met the love of her life, Michael (Mike) G. Thomas, to whom she was united in marriage on September 7, 1991. In 1995, Mike and Niecey had the pleasure of welcoming a beautiful baby girl into their circle. They named her Anisa Marshae. Niecey loved her nephews and would let them know by often spending time with them and doting on all of them. In her professional life, she loved taking care of her patients, especially the children. She was equally loved by all her patients, many of whom would specifically request her for their care. She was well respected by her peers, supervisors, and other professionals for her compassionate and professional work ethic. Over the course of her 30-plus-year span as a nurse, Niecey worked at several medical facilities, including the Teen Clinic at Eastside Medical Center and the Pulmonary Clinic at National Jewish Hospital. However, her passion was the one-on-one care she provided in the private sector. Because she enjoyed Serving and taking care of her assigned patients, she often went above and beyond the regular scope of care for her patients. When Mike became ill in 2007, Niecey, being the caregiver that she was, worked full-time and then came home to take care of him until he passed away on March 23, 2011. She continued her caregiving, making sure that all of Anisa’s needs, wants, and dreams were realized. This, of course, was magnified when her grandchildren, DJ and Asina, arrived. On December 2, 2025, while visiting one of her clients, Cheryl Denise Thomas suddenly became “the patient”. She was now in the hands of medical professionals, some of whom she had worked with, to reciprocate the loving care that she had once provided to many. As with everything else in life, she was a fighter, and she fought till she no longer had the strength to do so. On February 21, 2026, Cheryl Denise Thomas took off her badge, her uniform, andher stethoscope and put on a brand-new set of wings, as she left her earthly vessel and headed into eternity. Her feisty, talkative, and caring spirit has definitely left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Although we will miss her, we take comfort in knowing that she is in the hands of an Almighty and Just God, one who makes no mistakes. He knew she needed rest from the toils of this life and called her home to be with Him. We humbly accept His divine will. Cheryl Denise Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, her parents, Wallace and Ma`e Bean, and Charles McCaney; her brothers, Quintn Wortham and Kevin McCaney, her paternal and maternal grandparents, two aunts and two uncles, her cousins/playmates, Melikita and Tia Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Anisa, and her grandchildren; DJ and Asina, her brother, Darrell Bean, her nephews, Ashford, Cedric, Christopher, and Kquame; her godson, Valonte Riley, her friends, Valinda Bailey and Sylvia Love, as well as many other relatives, friends, and co-workers and associates.
